Description: 1978 PETE ROSE NL RECORD HIT STREAK GAME #38 – NEW NATIONAL LEAGUE RECORD STREAK TICKET STUB CINCINNATI REDS vs NEW YORK METS AT SHEA STADIUM The ticket stub in this listing is for the record-breaking July 25th Reds-Mets game at Shea Stadium when Pete Rose set a new modern National League record by hitting safely in his 38th consecutive game. It's been 46 years since Rose staged his epic run at what is perhaps baseball's most admired individual record: Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak. Pete's mid-Summer streak in 1978 became national news as he approached 30-straight right before the All-Star Game. By the time the Reds traveled to Shea Stadium to play the Mets on Monday, July 24th, Rose was only two games short of breaking the National League hit streak record held by Tommy Holmes of the Boston Braves since 1945. In the first game of a three-game set in New York, Pete went hitless in his first three at-bats before his single to left off former teammate Pat Zachry put him in a tie with Holmes at 37-straight. The next night, July 25th, Rose set the new National League record at 38-straight. Pete went 3-for-4 against Met starter Craig Swan, who pitched a complete game 9-2 victory for New York. Pete's record-breaking hit in the third inning was another opposite-field single to left. This hit was followed by a short pause on the field in recognition of Pete's achievement, with Rose basking in applause from 37,000 fans and receiving congratulations from the former record holder, Tommy Holmes.
