Time-Life's Sounds of the Seventies: 1979 is an engaging mix of styles and sounds that does a fine job of capturing the feel of the year. The 18 songs are all hits both minor and blockbuster and range from the smooth disco of Chic ("Good Times"), Sister Sledge ("We Are Family"), and Anita Ward ("Ring My Bell"), the soft rock of Eric Clapton ("Promises") and J.D. Souther ("You're Only Lonely"), the new wave pop of the Knack ("My Sharona") and Blondie ("Heart of Glass"), and the hard rock of Bad Company ("Rock & Roll Fantasy"), to the pop/rock sounds of Cheap Trick ("I Want You to Want Me") and ELO ("Don't Bring Me Down"). The volume loses a bit of steam due to the inclusion of a couple of songs that are so overplayed that most people could probably never hear them again and be okay, namely Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" and Rod Stewart's "D'Ya Think I'm Sexy."
