Formed in 1865, it provided freight, passenger and commuter rail services for many years. With the changing rail climate after World War II, the CNW began financial difficulties that led to its acquisition in 1995 by the Union Pacific Railroad (UP). Most of the surviving CNW trackage is now operated by the UP.
