Please take a moment to read about the truly exceptional provenance of this piece. There is extensive scholarship available online to confirm the information presented here. OSPAAAL (Organización de Solidaridad con los Pueblos de Africa, Asia, y America Latina...Organization of Solidarity with the Peoples of Africa, Asia, and Latin America) was founded as a function of the 1966 Tricontinental Conference in Havana with the intention of fighting imperialism, neocolonialism, and the violation of human rights. The main focus of the organization’s propaganda efforts were the internationally distributed Tricontinental Magazine and Tricontinental Bulletin, and the globally influential and critically acclaimed posters of solidarity with movements of liberation. The posters were designed to have the images speak for themselves, as a significant percentage of the targeted audience was illiterate as a function of their oppression. The images speak for themselves even fifty years later, and are a standard of modern political graphics, widely sought after and increasingly rare. OSPAAAL shut its doors for good in 2019. The two most common reference books for collectors are Richard Frick’s 2003 “The Tricontinental Solidarity Poster” and “OSPAAAL’s Poster, Art of Solidarity” published in 1997 by TRIcontinental/il Papiro. The text of “OSPAAAL’s Poster” was written by Eladio Rivadulla Pérez, who worked for OSPAAAL as an artist and as Artistic Director before moving to Ecuador about two decades ago. The poster you are considering is from the collection of his father, Eladio Rivadulla Martínez, and has been in the family’s possession since the era of manufacture. Eladio Rivadulla Martínez is widely considered one of the most important artists...and unquestionably the most important and influential serigrapher...in Cuba’s history. This poster comes with a story that parallels Cuba’s history pre and post revolution...an uncommon story of cultural continuity. Eladio Rivadulla Martínez designed the very first poster celebrating the victory of the revolution, which he cut the silkscreen for and printed overnight to be ready for Castro’s arrival in Havana, he helped build the poster production program at ICAIC (the first cultural institution of the revolution), he pioneered the use of alternative materials and processes during shortages throughout the embargo era, and he was instrumental in establishing independent collectives which brought arts to the people and stimulated participation throughout Cuba and helped introduce Cuban art to the world. Truly a monumental figure in Cuban graphics. A certificate of authenticity from Eladio Rivadulla Pérez will be provided for each poster from his family’s collection. Thank you for your time and consideration. We are also collectors and we love to talk about Cuban posters. Please ask questions. Photos are of the current condition of the poster, and it should arrive to the buyer in the same condition via USPS Priority Mail. We will be listing more posters from this collection in the coming weeks. Please keep us in mind. Thank you.
