He was inspired by the German expressionist movement and artists such as Kathe Kollwitz. Like many expressionists, Walker focused on "fringe" subjects outside of mainstream culture. Keeping a sketchbook with him at all times, Walker was drawn to capturing the melancholy, isolation, and suffering of New York City life. Drawing and painting daily, Walker left over 300 works of art upon his death in the late 1980s.
