Description: "Tenochtitlan Great Temple Rite of Spring" Source: Lost Empires, published in 1982 Description Title: "Grotesquely costumed in 'garments of gold,' the yellow skin of slain captives, Aztec priests mock-fight at the foot of Tenochtitlan's Great Temple. In grisly rites of spring, they impersonate Xipe Totec, 'our lord the flayed one' and god of renewal. Prisoners taken in battle were painted chalk white and crowned with tufts of down, then led - or dragged - one by one to the summit of the pyramid. While five priests bent a victim backward over a sacrificial stone, a sixth wielding a chert knife cut open his chest and ripped out his beating heart. This 'precious eagle-cactus fruit' the executioner held high and offered to the sun before tossing into a gourd or stone vessel. The bleeding body tumbled down the pyramid, spattering the stairs, and was seized by other priests who flayed it. They gave the flesh to the captor's family for a ceremonial meal. The head of the victim, beaded onto a rod, joined thousands more in a massive skull rack - ghoulish witnesses to the voracious appetite of the gods. During the festival, Aztec nobles sniffed flowers to mask the stench of the dead. Unique and distinctive.
