Description: "Tairona Indians of Colombia's Santa Marta Mountains" Source: Lost Empires, published in 1982 Description Title: "Gold-adorned Tairona Indians of Colombia's Santa Marta Mountains welcome traders from the coast in this idealized re-creation of a little-known culture. With the more simply dressed coastal people, the Tairona bartered gilded copper jewelry, cotton blankets, and parrot feathers for salt and fish. In exchange for emeralds mined by Vhibchan tribes to the south, they gave highly polished beads of carnelian, agate, and quartz. Clever engineers as well as merchants, the Tairona mastered their jungle environment and its long rainy season by constructing circular terraces of stone with intricate drainage systems. On the terraces they built houses similar to those of the Kogi, a modern Santa Marta tribe, and planted crops that included corn, manioc , and potatoes. Priests, warriors, and artisans mingled in a tight network of towns linked by stone stairways, roads, and bridges, and inhabited by nearly 300,000 people. Though socially cohesive, the towns maintained political autonomy, an independence that retarded Spanish incursions until the 1600s, when the last Tairona chiefs were captured and their cities burned.
