Description: 1983 Holy door tile from Pope John Paul II, a spiritual treasure and an authentic relic from one of the greatest Popes in history. There were two highlights of the Pontificate of the Blessed Pope John Paul II, which were the Holy Years - Extraordinary Holy Year of Redemption 1983 and the Great Jubilee of 2000. Each time, millions of pilgrims came to St. Peter's Cathedral to participate in the celebrations and to meet the Pope. As a symbol for the Holy Year the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica is opened only on this occasion - as a symbol of God's mercy. Pilgrims who enter the Cathedral through this Holy Door, under the usual conditions, receive the special Holy Year indulgence. Usually, the Holy Door is bricked up on the inside. In the 700 year old ritual of the opening of a Holy Year, the Pope himself strikes the brick wall with a silver hammer and opens it to the pilgrims. At the closing ceremony, it will be closed by the Pope himself. The Holy Door represents Jesus, the Good Shepherd and the gate of the sheep pen: "I am the gate. Whoever enters through me, will be safe. He will go in and out, and find pasture." (John 10:9). The bricks from the Holy Door are considers relics and are given out only to special dignitaries. It is considered a special blessing to own one.
