It was held at Darlington Raceway, and Bill Elliott was racing for the Winston Million. If Elliott won this race, he would win a million dollar bonus from Winston, an unheard of sum at that time. The race took place on September 1st in front of 80,000 fans. Elliott would start on the pole and lead the field of 40 to green.
