1986-88 Bill Cartwright New York Knicks Game Worn Road Jersey w/ MEARS Letter

Description: This is for an original 1986-1988 era game used New York Knicks road jersey which was worn by center Bill Cartwright. The jersey comes with a 3-page MEARS letter which describes the jersey as having evident “heavy” usage. After breaking Bill Russell’s career scoring record for the San Fransisco Dons, a record he still holds to this day, the Knicks made Cartwright their number one pick in the 1979 draft. The Knicks would also have first pick in the 1985 draft and this time they would choose Patrick Ewing over Sam Bowie and Michael Jordan. They would try to use the pair the same way the Houston Rockets used two number one picks, Ralph Sampson and Akeem Olajuwon as the Twin Towers with both in the starting lineup. While Houston had great success, the Knicks couldn’t find any chemistry with the two and could only manage a fifth-place finish in the Atlantic division. The following year saw Ewing as the starter and Cartwright coming off the bench but again the Knicks could only climb to third in the Atlantic division. Between 1986 and 1988, the time frame for this jersey, Cartwright would play 50 games in 1986-1987 and a full season of 82 games played in 1987-88 which would lead to the heavy usage tag by MEARS. This is an incredible jersey to own for a couple of reasons. Any Knicks jersey, with the extremely subtle changes over the years are coveted by not just Knick collectors but true basketball collectors. Every year the Knicks would be trying a different combination of players and there was always that chance that this could be the year. Jerseys of players with “King” or “Richardson” or “Webster” or “Starks” attest to the facts of the major changes the Knicks have made over the years, but Willis Reed still hasn’t found his way out of the tunnel again. Cartwright would leave the Knicks and join the Bulls where he would win 3 World Championship rings with some guys named Jordan and Pippen. So, you have a three-time champion connection, a Bulls Championship connection, a number 1 pick connection, years with the Knicks connection, and a Knicks Ewing-Cartwright connection.
