Some would call it irreverent. Or disrespectful. Or even barbaric. "It" is a sweet Victorian cottage, recently converted and expanded by architect Leonard Salvato in an exuberant contemporary style. The wood-frame, center-hall cottage, fronting on St. Charles Avenue, is a prim, trim survivor of the horse-and-buggy days in which it was built. Its audacious conversion features a brilliantly colored garden wall that encloses the back part of the property, then slices through the rear of the house at a 30 degree angle. The synthetic stucco-covered wall not only compromises but literally ravishes the building's historic and design integrity. Photo measures 10 x 8 inches. Photo is dated 02-16-1989.
