Description: In 1991 baseball cards were sent to troops in Iraq during an initiative called “Operation Topps Baseball,” where they shipped packages of trading cards to U.S. military personnel deployed in Iraq. The initiative aimed to bring a sense of comfort and nostalgia to soldiers by sharing a piece of American culture and giving them something fun to collect or trade. Topps Desert Shield baseball cards were a special edition set of trading cards produced in 1991 by Topps to honor U.S. troops deployed in Operation Desert Shield during the Gulf War. These cards were identical to the regular 1991 Topps baseball card set, with one distinguishing feature: a gold foil “Desert Shield” logo stamped in the upper corner of each card. Initially, Topps intended the cards to be a gift for soldiers stationed in the Middle East. Today, these 1991 Desert Shield cards are highly collectible, especially in good condition, because they serve as both a rare memorabilia of the Gulf War era and a unique item for baseball card collectors. These cards are notorious for their condition due to being shipping to Iraq and then returning to the US. PSA 10s are very rare. And what makes this particular card even cooler is that it’s Fred Lynn’s last card so it includes his full career stats!
