Ron Paugh (pronounced paw) set up the place about a dozen years ago to supply frames, forks, and just about anything else a biker might want to customize his ride. Of course, some guys just have to be different: Instead of building a highly personalized custom, they want to put their bike back the way it came out the factory door. A num- ber of these bros followed the swap meet circuit without finding what they needed at a price they could afford, so they asked if Paughco could help. After a few years of simi- lar calls, Paughco decided to add a line of what they call "obsolete" parts. That is, they aren't claiming the parts are original-only that they will replace the original and, in most instances, be indistinguishable. Many people sell newly manufac tured "obsolete" parts, but as many a frustrated restorer has discovered, a lot of the restoration parts out there don't fit. Flanges don't match, bolt holes don't line up, etc. Paughco 11 originals precisely wanted their parts to fit exactly. The only way to make sure of that was to try them out on a bike, and the only way to do that was to have one of every model of old H-D available to check a part against. So, Ron began collecting and restoring old bikes. Obviously, he had to draw a line somewhere, and he drew it at the 1936 EL, the first knuckle. That is, Paughco can supply just about any part from 1936 on, and they can guar- antee the part will fit because they've checked it against a fully restored bike. A large range of parts, though, requires a large collection of old bikes, so Ron hired two good men to do nothing but restorations. In the last six years they've built up the col- lection to over 100 bikes. To get them under one roof, Ron bought a building and expects to have it open to the public as the Paughco Motorcycle Museum in another year. Ron wants his "obsolete" parts to match the originals precisely, so he used original parts on the bikes in the Paughco collection. In chasing down original parts, he met a lot of ----------- 3 ----------- S ome things just never change-like the good feel- ing after a long bone-chilling mid-September ride that comes with sitting down to a nice warm bowl of bull testicles. And at old Bruce's Restaurant in Colorado's tiny town of Severence (better known as "neuter"), for a mere seven or so bucks a bro can pound down all the grade AAA steer sac he can swaller. We're talkin' Rocky Mountain oysters till the cows come home. And the don't-sneeze- or-you'll-miss-it town of Severence (off I-25), with a population push- ing upwards of 28, is the spot of preference to load the old road- weary, bull ball-cravin' boiler. In fact, a number of years back, so many bros from both Denver and Boulder, Colorado, as well as Cheyenne, Wyoming, bumped into each other power-shoveling bull balls, they decided to make a yearly run out of it. The easy part was com ing up with the name, "Something Annual Nut Run." The tough part was deciding on what time to meet up each year. 'Course everybody knows that bull balls tend to be too mushy in winter, stringy in spring, and as far as summer's concerned, well, they just get plain awful hard. And although your better sweet- breads are known to get sorta fibrous in fall, whatdahell, you can cook around that-or a bro could just add more salt and pepper, or even a couple healthy splashes from his own saddle stash of Tabasco or → ----------- 4 ----------- a '49 left-side case, a '48 right-side case, a 1940 knucklehead cam cover, and a set of '56 heads. Others, like a badly-bent springer fork and an out-of-line wishbone frame, Dog picked up at various swap meets. So the burning question keeping Dog up on that cold, frosty night was this: Could all these pieces of past perfection actually be trans- formed into the ultimate ride? Keep in mind that while every dog has his day, not every dog shares the same vision of the ultimate ride. To understand Dog's particular vision of the ultimate ride, you gotta understand that he's been around for a while. His first ride was a '46 45 flathead. Then came a '48, and after that a '53. "I grew up in the fifties," Dog says, "and, to me, the panhead is the prettiest motor that Harley- Davidson ever made. I wanted to build a bike that would show off that motor." →>>
