Description: Rare catalog for a sale of the fine jewels from the estate of Renee Baruch Samstag, held at Sotheby's in New York on April 11, 1995. Rare catalog for a sale of 53 exquisite jewels from the estate of the heiress of the Bernard Baruch fortune, all depicted in color and fully annotated, including jewels by Cartier, Boivin, Van Cleef & Arpels, Charlton, David Webb, Tiffany, Seaman Schepps, and Black, Starr and Frost. Includes the results of the auction, which took in over $1 million at time of sale. In excellent condition. Renee Baruch was the daughter of Bernard Baruch, best known as a financier, philanthropist, and key statesman in American politics for over 50 years, as an advisor to seven Presidents, from Woodrow Wilson to Eisenhower. He lavished jewelry on his wife Annie; their daughter Renee recalls evenings when her parents returned home from openings and galas, her mother decorated with glittering jewels. The family's pride was their 20,000-acre estate, Hobcaw, in Camden, South Carolina, where they entertained a variety of illustrious guests. Renee enjoyed playing hostess at Hobcaw until her marriage to Princeton graduate and Wall Street broker H. Robert Samstag. The couple lived in New York and in Pound Ridge, New York. Renee inherited much of the magnificent collection of jewels offered in this sale from her mother and grandmother, and it remained in family hands until the time of this sale.
