Description: Game used helmet from CU Buffs #28 punter Andy Mitchell, 1994-1997. Number 28 is written inside helmet next to left ear hole. I found a photo of a Koy Detmer helmet from the same period with the number written in the same exact spot. The helmet is a medium Riddell Air with an All-American recertification sticker dated 1997. It is over the original sticker. There is the original warranty sticker dated Aug.1994. This implies that this was Mitchells helmet for his entire 4 year career at CU. The mask is a Schutt and is dated 1997. Helmet is a super clean near mint. Punters don't sweat much. There are a couple scuffs on the shell. There is no chin strap. Mitchell played on some good CU teams. His first 3 years they finished 3rd, 5th and 8th in the AP poll. He played with Kordell Stewart and Rashaan Salaam the year Salaam rushed for 2000 yards and won the Heisman Trophy. He played in 3 bowl games (see below). He threw a pass in the Cotton Bowl for 28 yards! Here's that story: The fourth quarter was played in a cold rain before few fans, but the 1996 edition of the Cotton Bowl would not be concluded without controversy. Up 32-6 with five minutes to play, Colorado faced a fourth-and-14 from its 43-yard line. After seven consecutive running plays, a punt was certainly in order. Instead, Coach Rick Neuheisel called for a fake punt, with punter Andy Mitchell hitting Ryan Black for a 28-yard gain and a first down. The trick play led to the Buffs’ final score, and some hurt feelings on the Oregon sideline. First-year Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti gave a stern “no comment” about the play, but Neuheisel was quick to explain. “We faked the punt …. strictly because they were lined up to block the punt,” said the Buffs’ coach after the game. “And if you have been following Colorado football, we’ve had five of ‘em blocked.” Neuheisel concluded with an apology: “I apologize if there are any hard feelings.”Helmet is for display use only and is not to be used in a competitive nature.
