The illustrator of the card, Mitsuhiro Arita, originally submitted the artwork of the Base Set Pikachu as having yellow cheeks. Wizards of the Coast employees thought the cheeks were supposed to be red so they changed the artwork to red without Mitsuhiro Arita's permission. Eventually they switched it back to having yellow cheeks as Mitsuhiro had originally intended. Pikachu's cheeks turn yellow during an attack which explains why Mitsuhiro Arita wanted them yellow.
