19TH C. AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINAL STONE-CARVED THROWING CLUB

Description: A nineteenth century stone-carved Australian Aboriginal throwing club in a form doesn't conform to any other Australian examples I've found. It has a round head that becomes slightly elliptical in cross-section as it moves toward the shaft, below which is a 5" long, slightly elliptical, scratch-roughened gripping surface, with an almost-oval elliptical shape, thusly (), for the remainder of the shaft. It measures 29 5/8" long by 1 3/4" in diameter at the fattest point of the head. The wood is a very dense closed-pore hardwood similar to that found in identified Aboriginal clubs and boomerangs I have owned. It has an old, appealing, untouched surface, with much of the marks left by the stone carving process remaining. There are a few tight age cracks, but no other condition issues. 19TH C.
