The Marquise de Courcelles (1647-1733) was a famous salonniere in early 18th century. She published several literary works during her lifetime. This book is bound with a leather gold engraved cover, and the inside covers are hand painted. There are a few inscriptions and signatures on the first few pages, including one owner from the famous Rothschild family. PROVENANCE: This work is signed in the top right corner "L. Rothschild", in black ink that is oxidized to a dark brown, most likely Lionel Rothschild (1808-1879) from the British branch of the famous Rothschild European Banking family. This book was purchased from the estate of a UCLA Theater Arts Professor in Corona del Mar, CA. There are various inscriptions of other owners on the title page. Condition: Condition is commensurate with age and use. Losses and stains on leather.
