Franklin Silver Half Dollar - Background & Design: The Franklin Half Dollar was first unveiled to the public in 1948, replacing the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. It enjoyed a popular run until 1963, when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Just few months later in 1964, the U.S. Mint replaced the Franklin with a new half dollar honoring the fallen president. Had JFK not been killed, this might still be the Half Dollar found in our Mint and Proof Sets! These rare and collectible Franklin Half Dollars pictures Founding Father Benjamin Franklin on the obverse and the historical Liberty Bell on the reverse. A small eagle was placed to the right of the bell to fulfill the legal requirement that half dollars depict the figure of an eagle. Produced in 90 percent silver with reeded edge, the coin was struck at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco mints. As of December 30, 2021, the melt value of the $0.50 coin was approximately $8.37! Get your investment now! Kennedy Silver Half Dollar - Background & Design: The Kennedy half dollar, first minted in 1964, is a fifty-cent coin currently issued by the United States Mint. Intended as a memorial to the assassinated 35th president of the United States John F. Kennedy, it was authorized by Congress just over a month after his death. Use of existing works by Mint sculptors Gilroy Roberts and Frank Gasparro allowed dies to be prepared quickly, and striking of the new coins began in January 1964. The silver coins were hoarded upon their release in March 1964 by collectors and those interested in a memento of the late president. Although the Mint greatly increased production, the denomination was seldom seen in circulation. Continued rises in the price of silver increased the hoarding—many early Kennedy half dollars have been melted for their silver content. Starting with 1965-dated pieces, the percentage of fine silver was reduced from 90% to 40% (silver clad), but even with this change the coin saw little circulation. The obverse of the Kennedy Half Dollar shows a left facing portrait of the 35th President of the United States. The portrait was completed by former chief engraver of the United States Mint Gilroy Roberts who based it on the Kennedy Inaugural Medal he had designed two years earlier. Surrounding the portrait are the inscriptions of LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and the year. 1968-present Kennedy Half Dollars show the mintmark on the obverse right above the date. For the reverse of the Kennedy Silver Half Dollar, the presidential coat of arms is shown, as designed by chief engraver of the Mint Frank Gasparro. Surrounding the design which includes an eagle are the inscriptions of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and HALF DOLLAR. 1964-dated half dollar mintmarks were located to the bottom left of the coat of arms.
