Description: These two dogs belonged to a former president of the Borzoi Club. She was a famous dog breeder, show-dog judge, and antique collector: Gloria Reese of Beverly Hills, California. They were purchased at Bonhams, Los Angeles office, at auction, shortly after she died. In the auction catalog, titled "Dogs in Life and Art: The Estate of Gloria Reese," Bonhams wrote this about her: "Bonhams is pleased to offer the collection of Gloria Reese, who enjoyed a lifelong appreciation of dogs. Partnering with her husband, Nat, who she married in 1946, Gloria became on of America's most successful dog-show exhibitors ever. Her contributions to the sport spanned four decades and her dogs collectively won over 220 Best in Show; Three of her dogs became number one all breeds (a Greyhound, a Doberman Pinscher, and a Bouvier des Flandres. 'Bertie', her Ch. Chumbrian Black Pearl, was the number one sporting dog in American in 1984. She was also President of the Borzoi Club. Gloria R. Reese passed away on April 18, 2015 leaving fond memories but a vacuum in the dog show exhibitor profession than can never be filled." END OF QUOTE FROM THE AUCTION CATALOG There are two markings: on one foot is the date "1890" and on another foot is written "made in Austria." Each on a separate dog. They are each about 15 inches tall and the longer one is 21.5 inches long. There are no repairs, or chips, or cracks. These have a great pedigree. I guess the right word in this context is provenance. Gloria Reese was a giant in the Borzoi breeding and judging world. She selected and owned these; and that says quite a lot about them -- maybe all that needs be said. Shipping will require extreme caution. Each will be boxed in a box of its own; then they will be boxed in a larger box. And, maybe, I'll see when I pack them, box them a third time.
