Description: (2) ALTEC LANSING 290-8K COMPRESSION DRIVERS$1,500 pairThese Altec 290-8K compression drivers were purchased more than 20 years ago from (the Grateful Dead’s) pro sound company McCauley Sound here in San Francisco.These two somewhat rare Altec drivers were the only 290-8Ks among the many used drivers sold at McCauley's warehouse sale.They were tested today and they both sound great.Without a woofer or horns the drivers are bass shy of course, but they sound very clear, sweet, like most phenolic diaphragm drivers.Each of the nearly one hundred Altec drivers sold by McCauley during that warehouse sale, including these two, was modified by McCauley’s audio tech.Take a close look at the photos of the diaphragms and you’ll see that both phenolic-coated-linen domes feature four carefully cutout sections at the perimeter suspension. This was done to increase power handling by increasing ventilation of the gap. The voice coils are, of course, completely intact and fully functional.Reproduction diaphragms built to original specs, are available from Great Plains Audio but the modified diaphragms sound fine, I used this pair on my enormous Altec multi-cells (which are now, sadly, gone.)In general, the 1.4” throat Altec-Lansing 290-8K is highly regarded by experienced members of the horn loudspeaker community.This particular driver is very popular as a Klipschorn upgrade mod.Power rating: 100 watts band-limited pink noise (300Hz-10kHz) mounted on Altec 300Hz or 500Hz horns.Frequency Response: 300Hz-7kHzEfficiency: 1 watt in = 106.5 dB out at a 4’ distance from an Altec 311-90 horn mouthMinimum Impedance: 8 OhmsMagnet: 6.87 pound Ferrite V, 18,500 gauss flux densityDiaphragm: Phenolic with phenolic roll-type suspensionWeight: 32 poundsFinish: Gray “hammertone” textured enamel
