Description: 2 Engravings from the Grinnell Arctic Explorations , 1850s . Both explorations set out to search for Sir John Franklin who was lost in the Arctic in the 1840s . The first Grinnell Exploration was led by Mr. Grinnell and was not successful . The second Exploration was led by Dr. Kane which was also unsuccessful in their search for Sir John Franklin. The first engraving is titled " Parting Hawsers Off Godsend Ledge " , the lower left has printed J.Hamilton middle has Engraved at J.M.Butlers Establishment 84 Chestnut St. the lower right has G.Ulman below titled has ( From a sketch by Dr. Kane ) . The second is titled " The Open Water From Cape Jefferson " , it has most of same printing except under title it has ( From Description ) . Overall size of each is 5 1/4 x 8 5/8 . Both are original engravings from the 1850s . In honor of Dr.Elisha Kent Kane were named a Destroyer ( U.S.S. Kane ) , a research ship ( U.S.N.S. Kane ) and a U.S.Postal Stamp . He died in 1857 .
