Description: 1831 & 1844 Maps of Ancient Egypt, Pub. Chapman & Hall For The 'Society For Diffusion of Useful Knowledge'Map of Ptolemaic Egypt circa 30 BCE, Map of Victorian Era Egypt ca.184416.5"x 13.5"An old map done with a letter press from a plate. You can feel the impression of the plate on the paper. This map and many others were published by the "SDUK" to allow people of more modest means to own such maps and documents, etc.. This is an early version, possibly the first edition of this map. The map itself was based on the writings of the Roman historian Pliny, among others, and all based on Ptolemaic Egypt, after the conquest by the Macedonian (Greek) General Alexander The Great. Their rule lasted until the conquest by the Romans. In total they ruled from 350 to 30 BCE. Many of the place names are Greek or based on that language. The 1844 map shows Egypt as it was at the time of publication, 1844. That map has no year stated, the other has the date, 1831 just below the map area. Purchased from the estate of an avid collector of art and ephemera. We have other items for sale from this mans collection, so check out our store for more antiquities. From Wikipedia:The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (SDUK) was founded in London in 1826, mainly at the instigation of Whig MP Henry Brougham, with the object of publishing information to people who were unable to obtain formal teaching or who preferred self-education. The maps will be shipped rolled in a heavy tube.
