Description: Up for your consideration is a IMPORTANT set of two vintage ceramic art pottery bird sculptures handmade and signed by distinguished artist 林沐雨Hayashi Mokuu (1901-1991) of JAPAN. Hayashi Mokuu is a disciple of 5th Kijomizu ROKUBEI of Japan! Hayashi Mokuu, whose real name was Hayashi Yoshikazu was born in Kyoto in 1901, and passed away in 1991. He studied pottery under his father, who worked at one of the large Kyo Yaki kilns. At the age of 20, he took a position with the Imperial Household Kiln, to acquire skills with porcelain. After this, he studied with famous Kyoto craftsman Shimizu, where he began creating bonsai pottery. Mokuu was close friends with Heian Tofukuji, and they often created bonsai together, and also traded secrets and critiques of each other’s pottery works. Some Mokuu even use Tofukuji’s glazes. Mokuu’s work is pretty varied, from charming small painted pieces, to odd figurines, to simple unglazed Nanban. Each piece shows amazing craftsmanship, realistic quality and detail throughout! The bottom of each piece is signed "沐雨" translating to Mokuu! Set includes... 1. Bird with tail up - weighs 2 OZ and measures 4 Inches X 3 Inches X 1 1/2 Inches. 2. Bird with tail down - weighs 2 OZ and measures 4 1/2 Inches X 2 1/4 Inches X 1 1/2 Inches. Pair is in overall excellent original vintage condition - the bird with his tail up is in excellent original condition with no breaks, cracks or repairs! The bird with his tail down has a VERY minor flea bite chip on the tip of his beak (please refer to photos). MOKUU pottery pieces RARELY come up for sale!!
