Description: 2) Union-Castle Line Royal Mail Steamer RMS Balmoral Castle Postcards - Blank These two postcards were found while cleaning out my mother's house several months ago. My Grandfather served in WWI with Company B of 115th Army Construction Engineers. He brought these two postcards home from the war with his collection. This was the ship that delivered him and about 1500 others to France to do their job there building and repairing bridges. The ship was built to carry about 510 passengers, so 1500 felt like they were stuffed in there. The ship was built in Glasgow Scotland in 1910 for the Union-Castle Line for England to South Africa Service. In 1914, she became a troopship; following the Armistice in 1918, she repatriated US and Australian troops. Made two voyages in 1919 between Liverpool and New York for Cunard before returning to service for Union-Castle. Broken up in Wales in 1939. Her sister ship was the Edinburgh Castle. These two postcards are in excellent shape especially when you consider they are over a hundred years old and came home from a war. Neither of them have been used or posted. The postage at the time for foreign mailing was 1d or a Penny (old British currency) or for domestic mailing it was a 1/2d or a Halfpenny.
