This red wheel came about when Earnhardt's team got a set of tires from Evernham's Dodge team late in the race. At this time in NASCAR teams often swapped tires to match up serial numbers, believing they would perform better. I'm not sure this is why they had tires from Evernham, but it is one possible reason. In 2004, Earnhardt won the Daytona 500, six years to the day after his father won his only title in the Great American Race (and 3 years after his father was killed in the 2001 race). Earnhardt came very close to sweeping Speedweeks, as in addition to the Daytona 500, he also won his Gatorade Duel and the Busch Series race.
