THIS POUCH WAS MADE BY THRESSA G. FOX OF THE MANDA, HIDATSA, ARIKARA TRIBES NOW KNOWN AS THREE AFFILIATED TRIBES WHICH IS LOCATED IN NORTH DAKOTA.The colors Thressa chose for this pouch are very significant to the Plains Indians. These colors represent the 4 compass directions and the significance of each. Yellow: East, the color of the sunrise--A new beginning. White: South, where Spring and Summer live--Brings warm winds. Red: West, where the sun sets and the night begins. Very Wa Kan (holy). Black: North, where fall and winter live. Brings cold wind and death. This information is attributed to Errol Medicine of the Great Sioux Nation who made many pouches for this project. Only a few of Thressa's pouches show the 4 colors. Most of hers are one solid color all around. And Thressa didn't make nearly the number of pouches that other members of the Fox family produced (April Fox and Arline Fox Muzzy made many times the number that Thressa did). Most pouches from this tribe have leather ties to close the pouch. Thressa's pouches feature a dark or light color mother-of-pearl button beaded to the pouch, with a button hole cut into the flap to secure the pouch. On this one, she added a metal eagle feather from the point of the flap. The eagle is very highly regarded by virtually all tribes. On most, she used a tin cone or a beaded drop instead of the feather. I believe the simplicity of this pouch,the fact that Thressa made far less pouches, along with it's silver colored feather and mother-of-pearl button to keep it closed, make this item unique and more valuable.
