In 2004 the U.S. Mint issued the Thomas Alva Edison Silver Dollar to mark the 125th anniversary of the incandescent lightbulb invented by Edison in 1879. Although credited with numerous accomplishments and hundreds of inventions, Edison is mostly remembered for the light bulb as his most important achievement. The coins were produced in proof and uncirculated versions at the Philadelphia Mint. The obverse of the coin features a portrait of the great inventor holding an early experimental light bulb in his laboratory. The reverse design features a rendering of Edison's first light bulb.
