Australia has been producing mint year sets ever since decimal currency was introduced in 1966. The coins in mint sets are just the same as those we see in circulation but are in perfect condition. In response to customer feedback, from 2008 the Royal Australian Mint released two new two coin sets to complement the standard existing six coin sets. These additional two products (the 2 coin UNC set and the 2 coin proof set) were intended to ensure that the standard circulating and special coin designs are available in both proof and uncirculated finish at a modest additional price. 2010 marked the 150th anniversary of the Burke and Wills expedition and was the theme for the 2010 coin year sets issued by the Royal Australian Mint. The $1 coin spotlights the hardships endured by the Burke and Wills expedition team. Here we see the weary sole survivor of the expedition resting under the iconic carved dig tree on Coopers Creek in southwest Queensland. The 20 cent coin design depicts Burke and Wills astride camel and horse, departing on their epic journey. The camel tracks represent their south to north traveling route, while the footprints narrate the aid of the Aboriginal people, as well as the Indian, Afghan and Pakistani cameleers. The lustrous finish shows off the crisscrossing footprints of humans and camels, representative of the pioneers incredibly arduous journey.
