These live at altitudes of up to 4,000 m (13,100 ft) in the mountains of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. As humans have moved into the gorillas territory, they have been pushed further up into the mountains for long periods, forcing them to endure deadly conditions. In the forests, gorillas find shelter and food such as roots, fruits and tree bark. They are usually found on the ground in communities of up to 30 individuals. These troops are highly organized under a dominant adult male, known as a Silverback, who will organize activities such as eating and moving about the home range.
