A limited amount of these sets were made and sold at the 2018 All Star game Fanfest in Washington DC to commemorate the All Star game (unsold sets from the game were then sold at select Targets later on, and sets that weren't sold were returned to Topps who then sold the rest of the sets on their website, where all were sold out by December 2018). Until 2018, the All Star Game sets were an afterthought, as the regular factory sets were released and sold to the general public earlier in each year and people didn't make it a point to buy another complete set just for the foil stamp. As a result, Topps only made small amounts of these "All Star Game" sets for MLB as a way to promote the All Star games. You can readily find previous years All Star Game sets on eBay as well as retail online distributors (but not with the 2018 All Star Game sets).The 2018 sets took off in value with the emergence of Ronald Acuna and then Shohei Ohtani, the NL/AL MVPs of the 2023 seasons. Grading data available on PSA grading website indicates this All Star Game set was made in very limited quantity, possibly 3000 or less sets, which is miniscule compared to any of the other 2018 factory sealed sets.Typically, with any factory seal complete sets, at least one if not all three of the big online retailers will have any given set available in their inventory. But for some reason, none of the big online retailers have this 2018 All Star Game set. They may have other years All Star Game sets, but not 2018...because this set had a super limited print run!In 6 years (as of 8/6/24), only 311 of the All Star Game Ohtani have been submitted to PSA. In that same amount of time, 16,791 of the regular #700 Ohtani without the All Star game stamp have been sent to PSA for grading. There's even been more of the numbered gold #700 Ohtani (# to 2018) sent to PSA...386 submitted...than the All Star Game stamped Ohtani (PSA 10 versions of the Golds run $1800-2000). These population data points to how limited the All Star Game sets are. If a lot of these All Star game sets were printed/sold, people would have opened the sets and graded the 2 Ohtani and Acuna rookie cards by now (which is what has been done with the Ohtani horizontal rookie, the insert found in all the retail sets - to date, 3176 cards submitted to PSA for grading, as of 8/6/24). Below are some additional PSA population data for Ohtani's #700 rookie card that supports the 3000 or less print run for the 2018 Topps All Star Game set (see one of the pictures for the excel grid picture - the # of submitted Ohtani rookies across the various versions indicate how low the print run the All Star Game ASG set is).As of 8/6/24, this All Star Game stamped foil Ohtani rookie has a low GEM MINT population of only 208 PSA 10s graded (that's an increase of only 105 10s since 9/7/22 - almost 2 years time!). The 208 available All Star stamped Ohtani PSA 10 cards are a lower population (# of cards available in the PSA 10 grade) than the #700 Batting SP which has 266 PSA 10s (these have sold for an average of $850-900). As of 8/6/24, 542 of the batting SPs have been submitted, compared to only 311 of the All Star game stamped Ohtani rookie. The batting SP Ohtani rookie has a reported print run of 3000 cards only (yet more of those cards have been sent to PSA for grading than the All Star Game Ohtani rookie).The 2018 Bowman Chrome #1 Ohtani (which sells for $600-650) has 4190 PSA 10s as of 8/6/24, out of 7004 submitted (this card is not limited in comparison). The All Star game stamped Ohtani #700 has only 208 PSA 10s as of 8/6/24. Seems like a no brainer which one is a harder to find/more valuable card to stash away for the long term.
