Producing stunningly white blooms accented with shades of yellow and blue, African iris (Dietes vegeta) is a clumping perennial grown in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 8 through 11. Its 3-inch, beautiful blooms sit atop flower spikes that reach 2 to 5 feet tall. African iris is a versatile plant that tolerates standing water as well as drought conditions. To ensure the African iris is healthy and vigorous, provide the perennial with the proper care.
Plant care sheet -Plant the African iris in areas where it will receive at least six to eight hours of full sun in well-drained, organic-rich soil. Keep each plant 24 to 36 inches apart to ensure they have proper air circulation between them. -Provide regular watering -- about 1 inch of water per week -- during long periods of no rain. African irises are drought tolerant once established but grow best and produce better flowers when they receive water weekly. -Feed the African iris an all-purpose fertilizer once a month in March, June and August. Mix the liquid-soluble fertilizer with the appropriate amount of water as stated on the instructions. -Prune dead and dying foliage and spent blooms when necessary. Thin the clumping perennial, if needed, in the winter with sharp pruning shears. Remove fallen blooms, stems, leaves and petals from underneath and around the African iris. -Examine the plant for nematode infestation, which is the main pest problem for African irises. Root nematodes cause swellings and galls on roots. Foliar nematodes cause leaf damage, discoloration and lesions that resemble foliar damaged caused by viruses, fungal diseases and bacteria. -Prevent and manage nematodes by planting only nematode-free stock in solarized soil. Solarize the top 12 inches of soil before planting the African iris by covering the area with plastic for several weeks in hot weather. The soil needs to heat up to about 125 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 30 minutes to kill nematodes infesting the dirt. -Remove weeds from around the African iris by manually pulling them out of the ground and disposing of them. Weeds steal nutrients and water the African iris needs to grow strong and healthy. Add a 2-inch layer of organic mulch around the plant. Start the mulch a few inches away from the African iris’s base and extend it out toward its drip line.
