Viola odorata var. sulphurea 'Irish Elegance' - Sweet Violet - English Violet Cute as a button and decorated with dense heart shaped foliage and cheerful little apricot flowers, 'Irish Elegance' is a rare coloration of an old fashioned favorite, with sweet perfume and creamy peachy flowers. Hardy and easy to grow as any other Sweet Violet. Picking a posy of these sweetly scented, cheerfully colored flowers makes for a delightful arrangement in a small antique bottle or vase. Blooming in late winter through Spring, the fragrance is very much welcomed in the home when most flowers are still dormant. A very sturdy, clumping and running little perennial, Viola odorata 'Irish Elegance' makes for a great groundcover. If allowed to naturalize in a lawn, can create carpets of cheerful blooms. If you're looking for a rare and unique coloration of fragrant Violet in a woodland setting, this is a wonderful choice; Violets thrive in woodland settings. 'Irish Elegance' will create sparkle and light up shady, dark areas with their blooms. Easily growing in light levels from light shade to dappled and even full shade, while also being able to grow well in full or part sun. The beautiful heart shaped foliage is evergreen and can make a nice dense carpet, helping to suppress weeds and for holding soil on banks and helping with areas that suffer from erosion. Easily and freely self sows to produce more and more plants, forming a dense carpet in no time. 'Irish Elegance' has a long blooming period, from late winter right through spring. And then often repeats with some follow-up flowers throughout the summer and into autumn. The flowers are edible and are lovely in salads; sprinkle the petals or blooms in your greens of choice; candied violets are also a wonderful treat. Also a good choice for decorating cakes and edible garnishes. Fortunately, deer tend to avoid Violets. They are 'deer resistant' as deer do not like their taste. Rabbits might enjoy the plants, however, so be sure they are protected until well-established, or grown to a good size in a container prior to planting. When well-established, they can be eaten down to the ground and will quickly return. Grows great in lawns and can tolerate repeat mowing. Beautiful when naturalized in a lawn and planted with clover, crocus, other tiny bulbs and alpine strawberries. With its early blooming, it's an essential late winter pollinator friendly flower, offering a nice nectar source for bees when little else is blooming. Same goes for the blooming in late autumn, allowing bees to benefit from a nectar source before the harsh winters. Grows well in all soil types, including clay. Easily adjusts to a wide range of soil types – from sandy, through average garden loam, and is even tough enough to tackle clay. While happiest in a good loamy soil, it's not required. For best results, top-dress with compost twice per year and mulch with leaf litter, bits of bark, etc., which would be the norm in a woodland environment. Can grow in acid to alkaline soil. Exceptionally frost hardy, and can easily tolerate temperatures to below -5F. Resilient & low maintenance carpet Height: 6.5" mound of foliage, with the peachy-yellow flowers resting just above the leaves.Width: 10" creating a wide dense carpet of evergreen foliage. Once established will also self-sow and send out runners, to create a dense carpet that suppresses weeds. Germination Instructions:First soak the seeds for 24 hours in warm water. This will help to soften the hard coating of the seed. Sow the seed in a tray on the surface of good quality seed raising mix. Then gently press the seeds onto the surface of the mix, to ensure good contact. Barely cover the seed; Light helps germination of this plant. Maintain constant moisture and cooler temperatures over a long period by keeping seeds in a refrigerator for 6 weeks to simulate winter dormancy conditions. If you don't have space in your fridge for a tray of soil and seeds, a plastic baggie with slightly damp seedling starting mix will work. Then plant the moist seeds and media directly into pots, trays or directly into soil after cold treatment. Germination occurs irregularly over a long period - patience is key, but it will work! Seedlings often begin to emerge in approx. 30 days after cold treatment.
