Description: I didn't want to go to my 2:00 o'clock class, stay here in my room or go out either. I didn't want to stay sober, didn't want to get drunk; and I'd already seen both movies in town. I might have called up a girl, but I was broke. I walked out, and down the fraternity-house hall toward Brick's room; I was looking for something--trouble, maybe. Here we offer the first UK retail edition of Jack Finney's first novel, 5 Against the House, published in 1954 by Eyre and Spottiswoode, London. Finney is noted as a time-travel writer, but he actually spent a lot more time writing adventure stories of 1950's/60's suburban American men. In this first effort, the men are still in college, but still wandering toward adventure, namely, robbing a casino. Marvelous. The book would be later made into a Hollywood film, starring Kim Novak. The book comes complete with its first edition dust jacket with retail price obscured by the remnants of a price tag.Very nice boards (please see pics). Intact endpapers are uninscribed. Binding is very tight and square; text is very bright and crisp with some light foxing. 192 pages, approximately 8.25 x 5.5-inches. The lightly-worn dust jacket is sleeved in ph-neutral Mylar and ready to slip into your collection. This classic first will make a wonderful addition to your collection or a very special gift.
