Height: 16 - 36" Spacing: 10" - 12" Bloom Season: Summer to fall Soil & Water: Average Seed Sowing: Add fertilizer to the site where you want to grow the seeds. Dig to mix the fertilizer with soil and make the soil porous, then sow the seed on the surface or with a light dust of soil. Water it with care ever day in morning and in the evening to keep the soil moist for the seeds germinate. Germination Temperature: 70 - 80F Average Days To Germination: 21 - 28 days Seeds require a period of cold stratification to break their dormancy and jump-start the germination process. Normally, the seeds receive this stratification as they are left to overwinter out of doors. Because your forced-germination process is on a schedule that differs from the natural cycle, you must re-create the chillness period. Store the seeds in a fridge. Never store them in a freezer as the sudden temperature drop is likely to kill them. Store Seeds: Store seeds away from children. Sealed in their packaging in a cool, dry, dark place. You can store the seeds in a fridge. Never store them in a freezer as the sudden temperature drop is likely to kill them. .Do not leave the seed in direct sunlight as the heat generated may kill the seeds. You can sealed your seed in their packaging and put them in an airtight bottle to keep it dry. Cockscomb doesn't transplant well, and planting the seeds directly in the garden helps avoid the problems associated with transplant. Start seeds outdoors after the last frost when the soil has warmed to at least 70 degrees Fahrenheit and night temperatures are warm. Cover the seeds with a light dust of soil. Germination takes one to two weeks at 70 to 80 F when the soil is kept lightly moist. Starting Seeds Indoors Start cockscomb seeds indoors six to eight weeks before you plan to transplant them outdoors. Plant the seeds in sterile peat pots and use clean water to water it. Once the seeds germinate, place them in a sunny window and keep the soil moist but not soggy. When they have four true leaves, begin fertilizing the seedlings every two weeks with half-strength liquid fertilizer. Transplants Wait at least two weeks after the last frost to transplant the seedlings outdoors. you should take a full two weeks to acclimate the plants to outdoor conditions before planting them in the ground. One of the most common problems with cockscomb plants is stunted growth due to a sudden change in conditions. Make sure you plant the seedlings so the surrounding soil is even with the soil line on the plant. Planting them too deep can cause stem rot.
