Description: 5pc Staffordshire Childs Miniature Dinner Set LEARNING LESSONS (SOUVENIR) William Ridgway Staffordshire England c 1835 This gorgeous set of 5 miniature transferware child's doll size plates dates to circa 1830-40. The tiny set is transfer printed in burgundy (a rich shade between red and purple, sometimes called maroon). Finely made pieces with scalloped rims, perfect exact replica of the adult size wares made in the same period. Three of the plates measure 3-5/8 inches across, two with a recessed well, and the other two plates measures 3-1/4 inches across, all with scalloped rims. Decorated in a romantic allegorical scene with the official pattern name SOUVENIR, the set depicts two pairs of children sitting beneath a big urn of flowers. One little girl is reading from a book and the boy sitting beside her is studying a world globe. The other children are dressed in rags; the boy is resting his head on his hand while the girl clutches his arm. The metaphorical design is a pocket size work of art, depicting the Rags to Riches story illustrating the moral importance of education and Learning Lessons to avoid poverty and ignorance. The set is unmarked except for a letter Z. The pattern is illlustrated on page 112 of Maurice and Evelyn Milbourn's book Understanding Miniature British Pottery & Porcelain 1730-Present Day. Milbourn fig 136, p.112. The authors attribute the pattern to William Ridgway c1830-1840 in the Staffordshire region of England. These beautiful tiny plates are in great condition, with stilt marks on the foot rim, original to the making, and no chips, cracks, or repairs. Minor typical manufacturing imperfections all original to the making. Minor patina and fine overall glaze crazing. A gorgeous little set, with so much happening in such a tiny elegantly understated space. Sold as is, as shown. A perfect gift for your miniature transferware collecting friends and family.
