TANG DYNASTY - 618 - 907ADTang Coins are generally in the name of Emperor LI YUAN and he was named on the coins for the roughly 300 years of the Tang Dynasty era - even though it is questionable wither he actually lived that long . So coin could be issued anytime during the Tang era (Li Yuan ruled AD 618-626). Tang coins were mostly all the same and it is very difficult if not impossible to get exact rulers of Tang coins. The general style of Tang Coins was the same as the Wu shu coins but an average of between two and a half and four grams.. Wu (5) Shu was no longer expressed on the coins (They may have been called K'ai-yuans but we dont know for sure) but were basically Wu Shu's by another name, cast (Very roughly but consistently) to the weight standard of 0.65 grams per shu. This was a clever move as it meant that there was no profit in counterfeiting full weight coins. Counterfeiting was only profitable when under weight coins were cast, which were much more difficult to pass off. The effort must have worked as extreme light-weight examples of Tang coins are rarely seen - certainly a lot rarer than coins of earlier dynasties. This helped create economic stability that probably contributed to the success of the Tang Dynasty.
