Description: "A Dissertation upon Parties; In Several Letters to Caleb D'Anvers, Esq." was written by Henry St. John, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke and published in 1749 (this is the seventh edition) by R. Francklin (London). It's a leather-bound, 5"x8" hardcover with pagination: frontispiece, [3], iv-xxxix, [1], 322pp. First published in 1733, it's a treatise on English politics in the form of nineteen letters "notable for its sustained attack on the policies of Robert Walpole, commonly considered the first Prime Minister of England, and in its calls for the leaders of the Whigs and Tories...to work together in an effort to renew constitutional safeguards...." (Wythepedia site). It was influential in the American Colonies among future Revolutionary leaders such as John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. It's in good condition with cracks at the joints, loss at the spine ends, exposed corners, fairly heavy wear to the leather, several minor edge bumps. Presumably there was a title label on the spine, but it's no longer present. It's starting to crack at the second page. There are small marks to the pastedowns, ffep and title page.
