Description: This is a very nice and quite large older example of a Antelope headdress from carved wood, encrusted dark reddish-brown patina, open almond-shaped eyes, crowned by pointed striated horns. Antelope masks "karikpo" are used at the beginning of the farming season in ceremonies honouring the local founding ancestor. The mask is worn by a dancer who incorporates racing and graceful acrobatics into his performance and is accompanied by a dancer wearing an "ugly" mask who behaves in a wild and erratic fashion. The masquerades perform acrobatic feats requiring considerable agility. This is especially true in the case of those wearing horned masks , such as this example where the masquerader must jump especially high when performing the customary somersaults. This example measures 22 x 6 inches. We will also include a display stand.
