Both books are hardcover with tan dust jackets, uniformly bound in brown cloth, with handsome black stamped lettering on gilt blocks decorating their spines. The books are in what appears to be excellent unread condition. The covers are in very good condition; they have shelf wear, with minimal soiling, some nicks and tearing on the edges. Volume I, 703 pages, reviews the history of Mississippi from early settlement through the Civil War and Reconstruction to 1890. Volume II, 651 pages, reviews history from 1890 forward to 1970. The first volume has a personal inscription written from one of the authors, Jack Winton Gunn, and his signature in Volume II, the beginning of Chapter 41, page 477. Both books have historic maps on the inside cover, b/w photographs, illustrations, and are separately indexed. They are a highly-regarded reference regarding Mississippi, featuring 43 chapters on multiple facets of state history by numerous contributors. Wonderful books for the collector or gifts.
