Description: Success is counted sweetest,By those who ne'er succeed. Here we offer the first edition, second form, of Emily Dickinson's only publishing credit, "Success," featured in the poetry collection, A Masque of Poets, published by Roberts Brothers, Boston, in December, 1878. The previous month, the first printing of 2,000 copies featured a different cover design. This second, more attractive design was limited to just 500 copies. The idea of the collection was to publish a number of poems without crediting the authors, so that acclaim would not be dispensed unfairly due to the author's reputation. Notably, Henry David Thoreau and Louisa May Alcott are also contributors. This is a particularly attractive first, with maroon, gilt-impressed silk boards with beveled edges, red-bordered text, and gilt atop the text block (to keep dust out). Boards are remarkably well-preserved (please see pics). Intact endpapers bear some light penciled inscriptions. Binding is very tight and square, Text is very clean, bright, and crisp. 303 pages. The book measures approximately 7.25 x 5-inches. This iconic first edition will make a wonderful addition to your collection or a very special and thoughtful gift!
