Description: Up for sale is a copy of "A REPORT ON THE DEFENSES OF WASHINGTON, TO THE CHIEF OF ENGINEERS, U.S. ARMY" by Brevet Major General J.G. Barnard. Published in 1871 by Washington by the Government Printing Office. Professional Papers Of The Corps Of Engineers U.S. Army No. 20. Includes 30 plates all of which are present. Plate #23 is ripped in half, and all the plates have some age related browning and a few nicks along the edges. The first 20 plates have damage to the top - a huge chunk missing from the pages (see photo 9 above). Overall, the book is in generally in Good Condition. However, the partial leather boards have heavy stains, discoloration, scuffing, fading and stains. The spine is scuffed and the edges are scuffed and the leather on the corners is bumped and rubbed, as well. Internally, it is firmly bound with 152 pages + the 30 plates. There is some wear and browning to the pages. Some of the pages have nicks or creases around the edges. There is damage at the top of pages 115-152 where the huge chunk is missing. Some foxing and spotting on the front end pages and the Title page. There is writing by a previous owner on the Title page. There is spotting and foxing on the fold-out frontispiece, as well.
