Description: Oil on canvas classic landscape with feathery trees, rolling clouds and distant view, 28" by 38" (34" by 44" as framed), signed at lower left by English-American artist A. SPENCER (Andrew Spencer, born 1896), and titled on stretcher "A Berkshire Landscape". The artist has frequently been misidentified (often said to be one "Augustus Spencer" on AskArt and in auction records). According to a typed card affixed to the backing of a previous and very similar work of the artist which passed through my hands, Spencer was born in 1896 in London of Scottish parentage, under the name "Andrew Spencer". He went to Edinburgh for study, then came to the United States, settling in the Berkshire Mountains of western Massachusetts in 1932, where he painted prolifically peaceful landscapes in both small and large sizes. This example is in generally very good condition; canvas is a bit slack, and with age, the frame has become brittle, leading to significant losses at left, as shown in images (I may have retained one of the missing pieces---POSSIBLY available); the frame being original, and quite nice, it may be worth saving/restoring; although you may choose to just reframe. (If shipped without frame, shipping cost would be lower). I believe this piece was painted at some point from about the late 1930's through the early 1950's. It is a somewhat unusual work for the artist in that there are these tiny figures in the middle distance of the composition.
