PUBLISHED 1613. Contemporary vellum binding. Text and beautiful black and white headpieces and ornamented initials are printed on laid paper. Although written in English, this book was first published in Latin in 1611, just as the European Renaissance began to end in 1600. This book discusses "The Oath of Allegiance of 1606" which, according to Wikipedia, "was an oath requiring English Catholics to swear allegiance to James I over the Pope. It was adopted by Parliament the year after the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 (see Popish Recusants Act 1605). The oath was proclaimed law on 22 June 1606; it was also called the Oath of Obedience (Latin: juramentum fidelitatis). Whatever effect it had on the loyalty of his subjects, it caused an international controversy lasting a decade and more." (Wikipedia). This English translation of 1613, written by the author, Roger Widdrington, (a pseudonym for Thomas Preston), discusses this oath in great detail, answers various arguments for the Pope's power to depose Princes, and ultimately lauds swearing allegiance to King James I, (King of Scotland and first Stuart King of England from 1603 to 1625), rather than to the Pope. From Wikipedia: "Thomas Preston (1563 – 3 April 1640?) was an English Benedictine monk serving as one of the leaders of the mission to re-establish the Benedictine Order in England after the closure of monasteries during the 16th century. He is also remembered for his writings upholding the cause of James I of England in the allegiance oath controversy.” AUTHENTICITY: Even as the title page only is a facsimile copy tipped in, this book matches exactly the description in English Short Title Catalogue and Early English Books Online including the four misnumbered pages. The pages noted in EEBO as blurred or faded, are not blurred or faded in this copy. The two works bound together in this copy are: “The Theologicall Disputation Concerning the Oath of Allegiance” and “The Appendix to the Former Disputation”. The last page is correct: Faults Escaped (errata). The text of the title page, as found in EEBO reads: “A theologicall disputation concerning the oath of allegiance dedicated to the most holy father Pope Paul the fifth. Wherein all the principall arguments which haue hitherto beene brought by Cardinall Bellarmine, Iacobus Gretzer, Leonard Lessius, Martin Becanus, and diuers others, against the new oath of allegiance, lately established in England by act of Parliament, are sincerely, perspicuously, and exactly examined. By Roger Widdrington, an English Catholike. Translated out of Latin into English by the author himselfe, whereunto hee hath also added an appendix, wherein all the arguments, whach that most learned diuine Franciscus Suarez, hath lately brought for the Popes power to depose princes, and against the aforesaid oath of allegiance, are sincerely rehearsed, and answered.” 422 pp. CONDITION: At over 400 years old, this edition is in remarkable, overall “very good” condition. The binding is tight, but the vellum covers are significantly warped. The title page is a facsimile copy, tipped in. A vintage bookplate is affixed to the front pastedown from previous owner “The Hope Trust” in Edinburgh, pasted over handwritten notations in pencil. There are some neat notes in the margin, in what appears to be ink of the period. (Footnotes are in a column beside the text.) In the section called Author's Admonition to the Reader, the fifth leaf has a 3/4" section of the footnote column intentionally cut out. It appears that there was handwritten marginalia in this section. None of the text is missing and is beautifully legible. Quite a nice copy of a rare book.
