Description: ABNC souvenir card SO 34 ANA 1983 San Francisco CA Banking House F. Argenti $100 SO34 ANA 1983 souvenir card ABNC Mint American Bank Note Company for AMERICAN NUMISMATIC ASSOCIATION Colorado Springs, Colorado Few banks were organized in the Pacific Coast area prior to 1850, but Felix Argenti & Company did open a "Banking House" in San Francisco that year. It issued promissory notes, payable to the bearer on demand "in specie," in denominations of $50, $100, $500 and $1000. The notes were produced by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch and Edson, one of the engraving firms that merged to form the American Bank Note Company, printer of this intaglio replica from an original plate. Felix Argenti was an Italian immigrant whose colorful career began as an editor who satirized an Italian of note. After being imprisoned nine years for lampooning the king's mistress, he went to England and thence to America. He became well known as a financial writer in New York City before moving to California in 1849 and entering the banking field. Records show that the Banking House failed in 1855 and that Argenti then formed another firm that lasted only a year. He died on May 19, 1861.
