Description: This piece of artwork is very unique. A strikingly simple impression of a one eyed nude woman with an unusual head adornment. A haphazard, but prime example of a abstract expressionism charcoal sketch portrait- which the artist Walter Sanford is very well known for. Years ago, I purchased a stack of extra large original sketches dating from the 50s to 60s. They were all in less than fair condition. This is one of the few I kept. It was a larger drawing, with water damage, rips and tattered edges. In effort to preserve it, I carefully adhered it to a cardboard backing which I had cut to fit this unusual size shadowbox type vintage frame. I was able to remove the worst of the damage by cropping it down to size. I lightly coated the old degraded, poor quality sketch paper with varnish to prevent the charcoal from further transfer and smudging. I had also painted the frame black, as it was originally gold tone. *There is a signature, but that is not where it was originally on this piece. I glued it in what I thought the most was the most appropriate position per the shadows. It was cut off when Ifit the image to this frame, and I wanted to include it in the artwork. I have displayed it out of direct sunlight since Iput it together, and it's held up nicely. However, I don't recommend removing it from this frame due to the risk of further damage. This is not a gallery worthy piece by any means, but I find it an absolute treasure to behold, I think someone else will too. Over all, this is a super unique original artwork created by a somewhat mysterious, but world renowned artist, and then assembled for presentation and preservation half a century later, by me. This original and unique piece of art looks great in a multitude of decor styles. Whether you're a minimalist or maximalist. If you have an eclectic taste, or the most serious of mid century modern collectors, this one of a kind piece is sure to enhance any area where it is displayed.
