Description: This is an early sculpture by world renowned artist Andrew Wielawski. Made in 1973, it is carved from an old oak beam, and represents the evolving nature of the carving. The top link is finally free, but still cannot loosen itself from the whole, an ironic statement about growth and the perception of freedom. Later works by the artist can be found by googling ‘wielawski’ and clicking on ‘images’. Starting with wood, he moved to Italy at the urging of his mentor, artist Bogdan Grom, and began to carve marble.
