Description: This is the second Afghan necklace purchased by our mother in the early 70's in Sa'na, Yemen. This necklace belongs to the nomadic Kuchi Tribe of Afghanistan. It is made of low-grade silver. It has all the classic symbolism and shapes of the Afghani Tribal ritual. This magnificent festival necklace is inlaid with a much rarer Red Sea stone. The more common stone quarried around the Red Sea is the green turquoise stone. The spiritual, fertility symbolism can be seen with the repetitive male body shapes which run from end to end of the necklace. Please look at the picture that shows these cute little stick figures of little baby boys. The Afghan necklace was not just a dowry or financial statement but is laden with fertility and health and protection for the mother's children and family. The condition is very spectacular, however, there is one inlay lapis lazuli blue stone missing from the upper right corner of this piece. The necklace measures 19 3/4" from end to end.
