Description: Please read item description After The Battle, Issue 64 The first article of this issue is written in the “It Happened Here” format and is titled The Bombay Explosion. This extensive, detailed and well illustrated article tells of the explosion aboard the Liberty ship Fort Stikine in Bombay harbour on April 14th 1944. The explosion on the ship which was laden with explosives destroyed 9 other ships, killed more than 350, injured 1800 and made 50,000 people homeless. The circumstances behind what was one of the greatest man-made explosions in history were shrouded in secrecy and a clamp was imposed on all publicity by the military authorities. This feature looks at the cause of the explosion and its effects which are graphically illustrated with some dramatic photographs of the aftermath. The Battle Of Den Bosch is the main feature of this issue covering the offensive against the German forces around ‘s-Hertogenbosch in the drive to open up the port of Antwerp to the allied forces. Codenamed Operation Alan this article covers the fighting from both the allied and German side in detail and is well illustrated with photographs taken during the fighting and complemented with many modern photos to illustrate the “Then and Now” theme. Including many eye-witness accounts this feature gives an extremely graphic description of the severity of the fighting for this key strategic town. Major Martin….The Story Continues is a follow up to the article “Operation Mincemeat” covered in After The Battle three years earlier and more commonly known as “The Man Who Never Was”. This article written under the “Reader’s Investigations” format provides an update on the continuing investigation into one of the wars best kept secrets. The following article GI Baby looks at one example of what many associate as being an activity for which the American soldier has achieved a reputation. The final article titled Hitler’s 50th Birthday Parade looks at the celebrations to Mark this event in 1939. This includes photographs of the parade which emphasised Germany’s military might. This issue contains 54 pages of well researched Second World War military history much of which is presented in the familiar “Then and Now” format for which this publication is famous.
