Twenty Five years ago a small group of Great Lakes ship enthusiasts came together and formed the Marine Historical Society of Detroit, Inc. Their purpose was to preserve and exchange information and pictures about the ships sailing upon these Inland Sweetwater Seas. That Society has continued to grow until it now numbers 1000. There have been a tremendous number of changes taking place on the Great Lakes since then. Old obsolete vessels have always given way to new more efficient ships. Small ships have been replaced by larger vessels. Ships have worn out and been scrapped. Some sailed out and never made their Port of Call. The biggest transition came 1n 1959 when the St. Lawrence Seaway with its 800' x 80' Locks replaced the Old St. Lawrence Canal System of 265' x 45' Locks. The old "Canalers" (260'-43'-18') give way to the new "Canalers" (730'-75'-40'). Now these vessels are on the threshold of becoming small in comparison to the 1000' footers already being built. This point in history is but one step and we pause to record it now in, "AHOY and FAREWELL". Don't forget to check out other great deals in our eBay Store!!
